Name Wisteria
Genus/Species Wisteria sinensis (Chinese)
Family Fabaceae (Leguminosae)
Type Decidious vine
Aka
Origin China and Japan
General Long lived, twining vine, needs control
Use Showcase flowers, good for fences or trellis, patio covers, can be used as bank covers if left unsupported
Zones All zones
Attract
Sun Full sun to partial shade, blooms best in full sun
Water Average
Soil Not fussy but need good drainage. Alkaline soils need iron sulfate added
Size Is there a limit? Ours, even trimmed, is over fourty feet tall.
Plant Twining vine easily gets out of hand if not controlled
Leaf 12 to 16 " long groups of 15 to 19 leaflets
Flower Long grape like clusters of sweet pea type flowers
Bloom April to May
Seeds Seed pods, still researching. Chinese rarely produce pods, Japanese pods are abundant
Per Tanya Williams, collect pods when brown. Soak seeds in warm warer 24 hrs.
Nick three scores on seed side, soak another 24 hrs. Pop into well drained soil or germinate in wet paper towel
Feed Don't - lol!!
Prune Pruning is essential, extensive information to be added here.
Training is an art, truly creative fun
Prune heavily during winter season
Prune and train after bloom to control new growth
Buds for the next season's blooms are grown during the summer so be careful what you cut
Prop Seedlings do not bloom for several years. Cuttings, budded or grafted best.
Collect and dry seeds pods, plant 1" deep. Seeds rarely mimic parents. Dried pods left on the vine will POP and scatter seeds to the ends of the earth.
Notes: If plants fail to bloom with hold adding nitrogen for entire growing season.
If plants still fail to bloom, prune back roots by spading into the ground, AFTER bloom season
Danger Seeds and seed pods are poisonous
Picture

Japanese = floribunda, winds clockwise
