Angelina's Bar and Grill - casual family
400 South Mains St, Fort Bragg, CA    95437 - 707.964.1700

* This is a larger restaurant, semi attached to a hotel, the separate bar houses many of the locals, the restaurant is pretty empty and reminds me of the restaurants oft times found attached to a bowling alley. We seat ourselves in one of the many booths to discover ripped vinyl upholstery, move to another booth just as we notice the odor is not, well, something we want to eat near. We were glimpsing over the menu, it looked fairly standard, when we decided we should probably meander down the street in search of another location for food. The waitress who orignally waived us to any table didn't blink an eye. Aug 2019

Beachfront Bistro - classic white table sea front
16011 Boat Basin Road, Brookings, OR 97415 - 541.813.2545

* I generally journal a great deal more than I did, contributing this to my fatigue, but it was a clean, pleasant, roomy area, extensive menu and worth a repeat visit. We had clam chowder, salads and crab cakes, drinks from the bar for a very reasonable price. Not bad at all. And thanks to the blonde waitress who saved the night by overriding the brunette who said they were closed even though it was fifteen minutes before their appointed closing time. Aug 2019

Compass Rose Cafe - trendy family cafe
1625 Chetco Ave, Brookings, OR 97415 - 541.661.7772 - website - facebook

* A delightful cafe on the main street, a bit hidden so you have to really look for it. Very trendy, 10 steel brushed tables, sunny frontage windows, many designer coffees, and trivia pursuit cards to strain your brain while you sit and relax listening to 70's tunes. The menu is excellent, standard breakfasts, omelets, wraps, burritos, sandwiches, paninis, soups and salads. Even beers! I had the Smith River omelet, avocado, green pepper, green onion, jack and cheddar, David had the same with ham. The killer? The hash browns! They are made with a panini press but the flavor? And they aren't telling. Thank you, Victoria!! Aug 2019

Max's - upscale Denny's with a bar
110 Grass Valley Hwy, Auburn, CA 95603 - 530.888.6100

* Nice full bar, dignified wood, stone glass with subdued colors atmosphere gave me hope after reading the not-so-good ratings. Sharp looking booths, tables, bar seating, and a conference room. Seated promptly, drinks ordered and delivered. The menu runs between $12 and $35 for the rib eye, includes small plates, salads, sandwiches, interesting starters, pasta, soups, ravioli, salmon, thai prawns, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken and a patty melt. We ordered a vegetable hummus starter, which never got delivered. We had two drinsk, 2 salads, one snadwich, all for way too much money. I doubt we would return if in the area. Aug 2019

Pacific Sushi and Grill - informal steakhouse
613 Chetco Ave, Brookings, OR 97415 - 541-251-7707 - website - facebook

* Let me state, right off the bat, I am not a sushi fan. I can't even claim to have tried it. But, I pulled up my big girl panties and went along to this place on a recommendation. Probably because they had a full bar (Drambuie always makes things look and feel better, haha) but to their credit, the staff is just superb. I ordered the Chetco, salmon, cream cheese, green onion, crab. I was advised the salmon was smoked but might still retain a raw texture. My not so brave hubby had a hamburger, but he did very well with the chopsticks for a while, I was raised on them. The result? I ate a goodly amount, surprised it was cold (it never occurred to dummy me and cream cheese cold is well, hmm, not tasty) but focused on the yummy tempura vegies. Oh my, they were so good!! David loved his burger! When the hostess saw I had only partially eaten my long plate of food she insisted on a refund, we declined only to find a discount on the final bill. Aug 2019

Patterson's Pub - small cozy pub
10485 Lansing Street, Mendocino, CA 9546 - 707.937.4782 - website - facebook

* Oh my. I can't say enough. Small pub atmosphere that makes me miss the UK horribly, 6 tables and the bar with a superb menu that includes salads, fish and chips, prawns, pastas, many starters, burgers made of either elk, bison, turkey, vegies or Kobe beef, sandwiches, wraps, prices from $14 to $22. A full bar was as incredible as the server, Lizz, who knew exactly what scotch was available, ten points for carrying Glenfiddich!! I got the special, salmon cooked to absolute perfection with a basil drizzle and a salad was crunchy romaine and super thin grates of parm topped off with the best dressing I have ever had. David's ribs that melted off the bone were served with a killer coleslaw, baked beans and a mac and cheese that is way better than mine, a confession you won't often hear from me. Aug 2019

Powderhorn Cafe & Pie - busting old fashioned cafe
321 NE 6th St, Grants Pass, OR 97526 - 541.479.9403 - facebook

* 8 booths, about 8 tables, seating at the counter, dog water bowl outside, and the waitresses know their customer's names. Napkins with drawings from thankful patrons adorn the walls. The cinnamon rolls are gone early, and they must be extremely good, because the rest of the food was. Neither of us could finish our breakfast, overflowing plates with omelets, scrambled, sausage (oh yum) and omg hash browns. They sure don't skimp on the toast butter, either. Aug 2019

River's Edge - small cozy pub
1936 Rogue River Hiway, Grants Pass, OR 97527 - 541.244.1182 - website - facebook

* Class all the way from the front doors to the river's edge, pun intended. Many delicious starters, salads, steaks, seafood, duck (yuck) and chicken, and your salad is served with a chilled fork. Unheard of these days. Creme brulee is totally worth a trip, reservations highly recommended, their parking lot is constantly full. Aug 2019

Taprock Northwest Grill - upscale bistro
971 SE 6th St, Grants Pass, OR 97526 - 541.955.5998 - website - facebook

* We came here with our real estate agent for a quick brunch, but would like to return for dinner to check out more of the menu. A crab salad was split between my husband and I, large enough to have plenty left over. Lovely salad dressing. The ambiance is jaw dropping if you are not from the area and are unused to being able to sit alongside the river and observe wildlife in flight among the trees and breeze. As many places seem to be, there are several levels, and an elevator! Taprock was exceptional, as are most places we have visited in Grants Pass, superb, respectful, graceful and dignified service.
